Cetacean Research

Humpbacks!

In January 2023 we teamed up with the Caribbean Cetacean Society to begin the study of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) within BVI waters!

Our program conducts monthly surveys using visual detection, acoustics and photo identification. Through observation from the vessel, hydrophone recordings, as well as ID shots of the fluke and/or dorsal, we can determine where and when whales like the ones pictured here are traveling through (or staying) in our waters.

With this data, we can find the best way to protect these beautiful species within our waters.

Anegada

We have focused our scientific transect surveys to the North Side of Anegada where we believe Humpbacks frequent the shallow coastal areas and Sperm Whales frequent the deeper waters that are unique to Anegada's sharp drop-off bathymetry.

Tail Fluke Identifications

Did you know that every Humpback whale has a unique pattern on the underside of their fluke, just like we have on our fingerprints?

If perfectly captured, this can be shared with an international database that can help us to track their migrations.
